We believe that history is an important part of living the present, as well as building the future. People’s stories allow us to walk a while in someone else’s shoes. Their successes give us insight into what works. Their failures warn us about what doesn’t. History connects us and gives us a shared understanding of the world.
Digging into the details of peoples’ lives and experiences also reveal that things are frequently more complicated than the tidy narratives we’re often presented. People are complicated, wonderful, and terrible creatures. They’re messy. This is their messy history.
